In this session, we were introduced different resources to investigate language, e.g. online dictionaries and thesaurus, pronunciation dictionaries for proper nouns and the use of a corpus. Among all the resources, I find online dictionaries particularly useful to my work. I seldom use online dictionaries to look up words because I think a print dictionary is more informative. However, more online resources are now incorporated in an online dictionary. For instance, in the Longman online dictionary, thesaurus with examples and corpus are included in the entry of 'dangerous' (see http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/dangerous). We can then learn more about how the word is used in daily life, not only from one or two examples in a print dictionary.
In addition, the development of information technology allows easy access to online resources. This can train students to learn how to select suitable and useful online resources on the Internet. As I am now teaching a P4 class with more able students, I think it is a good to start training them to use an online dictionary. Help them to be autonomous learners!!
